What is a neonatologist?

Neonatologists are a type of pediatric specialist who provides customized care to newborns and infants. Our neonatologists use state-of-the-art technology to diagnose and care for babies who require highly specialized care. In-house subspecialists, specially trained nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners and support staff work with neonatologists around-the-clock to ensure newborns and infants receive the comprehensive care they need.

If advanced care is needed, neonatologists work in collaboration with a team of expert subspecialists through UMMC’s Center for Maternal and Fetal Care. This multidisciplinary team works together to care for both the mother and child’s unique needs - all under one roof.

About newborn services

The Center for Maternal and Fetal Care draws on the newborn medicine program to provide a comprehensive, compassionate environment for babies delivered at the Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants, as well as those transferred from other hospitals in Mississippi and neighboring states, who need additional attention after delivery.

Mississippi’s only Level IV neonatal facility devoted to the health and well-being of newborns is housed at UMMC in the Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants. Our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admits around 900 newborns and infants each year from across the state and the southeast region. In addition to the NICU, there is an intermediate care nursery for newborns who are ready to step down from the NICU but still require customized care.

The NICU care team offers:

• Comprehensive, around-the-clock care for newborns and infants.
• Highly advanced medical treatment for newborns who may be extremely premature, have low birth weight or require other types of specialized care.
• Treatment at Mississippi’s only Level IV newborn care facility.
